This will be the first lesson in a series of posts about food photography and styling. The aim of the series is to share what I have learnt through the past 4 years of food blogging, being the photographer and the stylist behind this blog.

I will discuss things like angles, backgrounds, props, depth of field, lighting, vertical and horizontal food photography and much more. I do  have a list of lessons in mind but I would love to hear from you!

The lessons are not aimed at food bloggers or food photographers only. I will be sharing many styling tips regarding, color matching, backgrounds and how to organise any table or food setting. This info can be helpful to anyone who wants to go the extra mile in setting a table, arranging a center piece or serving food . Little touches can completely transform any presentation. Whether you’re a hostess who wants to shine in an upcoming dinner or event, or a mom who is looking for little ways to make her family feel extra special or if you are a bed and breakfast hotel owner who wants to create a signature look or feel to your meals..do stay tuned

For this lesson, I will be discussing one of the most important elements in food photography

The story!

Photography is an art, and all art in my opinion, is most enjoyable, most touching, and most memorable when it tells a story.

In food photography the story your picture is trying to tell will affect almost every single decision you make in styling and in capturing the picture.

Should I shoot at a low or high angle?

Should I take the picture vertically or horizontally?

What colors should I use in my set up?

Which background?

Should I use a shallow depth of field and blur everything in the background?or should I bring everything into focus?

The answer to all these questions depends on your answer to this:

What story are you trying to tell in your picture or setting?

To create a good story, you need to think of a few key elements.

1. The hero
2. The setting : where and when did the story happen
3. What do you want your audience to feel?

Let’s try a few examples to explain all that

In my Dutch baby recipe I wanted to convey the story of a special breakfast.The hero here is the dutch baby. Someone woke up early to make this especially for you.

To tell my story I chose to shoot in bright light, to make you feel it is early morning, the little strawberry “hearts” and the colorful fork are there to say you are special, I want you to know that.The set up is simple, a cup of milk, a little platter of strawberries and our hero.Again, the aim is to convey a breakfast setting. This breakfast is simple with a few touches to make you feel extra special

In the Jordanian Matabka picture, I wanted to showcase my hero in a rustic arabic setting to make you feel that this is an old Jordanian recipe.The plate comes from Hebron in Palestine and these handpainted plates are quite popular  in Jordan and in Palestine.The straw tray in the back with the simply arranged veggies and yogurt are there to tell you that this is the way you will be served matabka if you ever walked into a house in the north of Jordan, simple, unpretentious and delicious.

Sometimes all I want the picture to say is, this is fun, delicious and kids LOVE it! So I took this picture of my daughter unwinding and eating a chimney cake. The smile really says it all.

When I made the mamonia, I really wanted my picture to convey the beautiful rich heritage of Syria. Despite everything that is happening in Syria now,in my book, Syria will always mean elegance, pride, a deep and rooted rich history. I grew up with Syrian Neighbours right next door and I will always fondly remember their love for life and everything that is beautiful. So for this picture I chose a background with middle eastern patterns, I added the old recipe book in the background to convey the fact that this is an old traditional recipe. The warm light is there to remind you of the warm sunny days in the middle east. The playful somewhat random arrangement of the cinnamon and pistachios aims to make you feel that this is a popular recipe people make in a laid back cozy setting.

Let’s try one last example with heroes from the same category ..cookies

In the maamoul “stuffed date cookies” the story is that this is a festive cookie, served during Eid.The light is bright and cheerful, to make you feel that it is early on Eid morning. the beautifully decorated teacups, napkin , and the crystal rosary are their to convey the fact that this a special recipe, something elegant and worthy of celebration.

On the other hand these chocolate coconut and oat cookies tell a different story. It is still morning but it is a quiet one, gentle light, a cute stuffed elephant and a magazine you set aside to get your 5 year old a platter of cookies and a cup of milk. The two of you can enjoy a cuddle along with a couple of cookies

So you see the story behind every picture affects everything that is in it. Knowing what story you want to tell makes taking the picture easier and more enjoyable

So the next time you set out to set a table, prepare a meal or take a picture. Think of the story you want to tell first. It will make all the difference

 التصوير الفوتوغرافي بكل اشكاله..فن يحكي قصه… سواء كنت تلتقط صوره لوجه باسم او باكي…ليوم مشمس او كئيب..لجبال شامخه او وديان موحشه..انت تحكي قصه

..تصوير الطعام ليس استثناء لهذه القاعدة . بل على العكس..تكاد القصه ان تكون اهم العناصر المتحكمه في خياراتك حول الصوره

هل علي ان اصور من زاوية مرتفعه ام منخفضه؟

  هل اصور بشكل عمودي ام افقي؟

اي الالوان يجب ان استخدم في تنسيق صورتي؟

ما هي الخلفيه المناسبه؟

هل علي ان ازيد عزل الخلفية ام اقلله؟

اجوبه كل هذه الاسئله تعتمد على سؤال مفصلي..ما هي القصه التي تريد لصورك ان تحكيها؟

لنتمكن من تكوين قصه ممتعه و شيقه يجب علينا ان نفكر في مجموعه من العناصر:

اولا يجب ان نحدد من هو البطل

..لنأخذ وصفتنا الاخيره في نكهه عربيه كمثال…

بطل القصه هو بالتأكيد البرازق

و لكن هل يكفي ان اصور البرازق وحدها؟

..الجواب ببساطه لا..لان البرازق وحدها مثل بطل يقف وحيدا على خشبه المسرح لا تستطيع ان تروي قصه

اتذكرون مهمتنا الاولى..عندما درسنا صور المصورين المحترفين..كان هناك سؤالان مهمان..

بماذا جعلتك الصورة تشعر

و ماذا تعتقد ان القصه من وراءها كانت

اذا اردت ان تصور صوره رائعه عليك ان تفكر جيدا في القصه التي تريد ان تحكيها و بالمشاعر التي تريد ان تنقلها للمشاهد

لنعد الى مثال البرازق..البرازق كما معظم وصفاتنا في نكهه عربيه هي وصفات تراثيه اصيله..كل منها جزء من الارث الحضاري للبلد الذي تنتمي اليه..قد تكون هذه زاويه رائعه لتروي منها قصتك..

..من هذه الزاويه عليك ان تختار خلفيه و عناصر و الوان توحي بانها عربيه اصيله.فالخلفيه قد تكون صينيه او صحنا مزخرفا او دشداشه شرقيه الطابع.. قد تختارفناجين قهوه او كاسات شاي منقوشه بحروف عربيه او نقوش شرقيه..عندما تفكر في الاضاءة ربما تلجأ الى اضاءة دافئه ..كشمس بلادنا..

دعنا نجرب زاويه اخرى…
ربما  تفكر في الصوره من منطلق ان البرازق كما كل البسكوت هي محببه للاطفال..عندها قد تصور الكعكات بين يدي طفل او قد تصور انامل صغيره و هي تغمس العجين في السمسم او قد تصور وجها صغيرا مغطى بالطحين و بابتسامه مشرقه

في القصتين بقيت البرازق هي البطله و لكن القصه اختلفت تماما..و مع اختلاف
القصهاختلفت كل عناصر الصوره و كل قراراتك المتعلقه بها

لنأخذ امثله اخرى

في هذه الصوره لنوع من البانكيك المخبوز في الفرن..البطل هو بالتأكيد البانكيك و لكن القصه التي يحكيها هي قصه افطار صباحي مميز..شخص ما استيقظ باكرا ليجهز لك هذا الطبق الخاص. لايصال القصه اخترت اضاءة مشرقه قويه لتوحي بالصباح الباكر..القلوب المصنوعه من الفراوله و الشوكه الملونه المميزة هي اضافات لتقول..انا اهتم بك و احبك و لذلك جهزت هذا الافطار المميز لك..بقيه العناصر بسيطه..كاس حليب و صحن فيه فراوله..هي قصه فطور بسيط مع بعض اللمسات الرقيقه التي تجعله مميزا

في صوره المطابقه الهدف من القصه الايحاء ان هذه وصفه تراثيه قديمه..اختيار الصحن و الارضيه الخشبيه المتشققه و صحن القش في الخلف مع الخضار المرتبه ببساطه و عشوائيه..كل هذه العناصر هدفها ايصال القصه..وصفه تراثيه..بسيطه و لكنها مميزه لانها تراث نحبه و نحافظ عليه..جمال التراث في بساطته و رقه تفاصيله

في صوره المأمونيه كان هدفي و قصتي هي ايصال فكره ان هذه وصفه من سوريا الحبيبه..ذات التراث الغني و التاريخ المليء بكل ما هو اصيل و جميل..رغم كل ما يحدث تبقى سوريا بالنسبه لي عنوان الاناقه و العنفوان و الكبرياء..عندما كنت طفله كان جيراننا من سوريا و قد عشت اجمل ايام طفولتي و انا امرح و العب مع ابنائهم..عندما اذكرهم..يغمرني شعور بالدف عندما اتذكر حبهم للحياة و لكل ما هو جميل

لايصال كل هذه المشاعر..اخترت صينيه ذات نقوش شرقيه و دفتر وصفات قديم ذو اوراق مصفره ليوحي بتراثيه الوصفه..الاضاءة دافئه و حميميه كشمس الشام ..عبثيه ترتيب القرفه و المكسرات كان هدفها الايحاء ان هذه وصفه تراثيه بسيطه..تحضر بمحبه في كل بيت..ببساطه و دون تعقيد

اتمنى ان تكون الامثله ساعدت في ايصال الفكره..

واجبكم لهذا الدرس  هو ان تصوروا صوره و لكن قبل ان تمسكوا بالكاميرا عليكم ان تجلسوا بهدوء..مع ورقه و قلم و تكتبوا قصه ..خذوا ..وقتكم  و فكروا فيها جيدا:..

من هو البطل؟

هل هو بطل وحيد ام هل هناك شخصيات مسانده في هذه القصه؟

اين و متى اخذت الصوره؟

ما القصه التي تدور حوله و ما المشاعر التي اريد ان انقلها من خلال صورتي؟

فكروا بالقصه جيدا و اكتبوها..لاننا سنستخدمها في دروس قادمه لنبني عليها افكارا اخرى..لذلك رجاء لا تتجاهلوا هذه الخطوة

بعد كتابه القصه صوروا الصوره و حملوها في الالبوم المخصص لهذا الدرس و معها اكتبوا القصه وراء الصوره
