Healthy cookie dough dip (sneaky desserts take 3)

What would you say if I told you that there is a healthy cookie dough dip that you can serve your kids and feel zero guilt if they finish the whole bowl?

A cookie dough dip that is healthy enough to be served for breakfast?

A cookie dough that tastes every bit as the real deal but without butter, eggs, or cream. You can even make this vegan, nut free and refined sugar free!

I expect your answer would be either: You’re mad! or too good to be true.

Well I have my mad moments but this is not one of them and it is not too good to be true

Remember when we had our sneaky desserts with hidden veggies challenge? Back then I posted sneaky desserts that were a huge hit with the kids. The white bean coconut cake has become a family favorite and the chocolate brownies with two hidden ingredients never fail to amaze anyone who tries them, no one can guess the secret ingredients. Today I am posting the last of the trio, this healthy cookie dough dip.

cookie dough dip

I know I am not the only one who finds cookie dough irresistible but every cookie dough dip recipe I have seen is loaded with butter and sugar in a way that makes you gain weight just by reading the recipe! There had to be another way!
Having tried white beans in a cake, the texture and taste of white bean puree with some vanilla and sugar was unbelievably close to a heavenly cookie dough! Some googling and playing around with the recipe and this healthy cookie dough dip was born. If you try to google healthy cookie dough dip or dessert hummus you will come across many recipes and they are all basically the same, your base is white beans, chickpeas or potatoes, that gives you the texture and the mouth feel of a cookie dough. Next comes the sweetener, sugar, honey, maple syrup, date puree or your favorite sweetener. Add some vanilla and you won’t believe your taste buds!

This is more of a guideline than a recipe really, you can play around with everything, the sweetness, the flavor additives, try some cinnamon, perhaps cardamom for a new interesting twist. You can also increase the nutritional value by adding some oat flour, ground flax seeds or ground chia. Have fun, make your very own mix and watch as jaws hit the floor when you tell people what’s in the cookie dough they can’t stop eating 🙂

cookie dough dip with chocolate chips

Healthy cookie dough dip

Inspired by chocolate covered Katie

1 1/2 cups white beans (you can also use chickpeas or black beans for a chocolate version)

1/8 tsp salt

2 tsp pure vanilla extract

1/4 to 1/2 cup date puree or honey (sugar or your choice of sweetener)

up to 1/4 cup milk  (add it to thin the dip IF you need it, you can use dairy, almond or coconut ) see notes

Your favorite sweetener, the amount is up to your taste, I used 1/2 cup date puree

Chocolate chips

Optional additions
1/4- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup your favorite nut butter
1/4 cup finely ground oat flour

1/4 cup cocoa powder or more if you like an intense chocolate taste

Instructions

Add all ingredients (except for chocolate chips) to your food processor , and blend until very smooth.

Then mix in the chocolate chips.

Notes:

I used home cooked white beans, you soak the beans the night before then cook them until they are soft. Home cooked beans give you a dip that is thicker in consistency as opposed to the canned ones.

For a chocolate version consider using black beans as your base and add cocoa powder as my talented fellow secret recipe club member Lisa did when she made my recipe

When you use liquid sweetners like honey or maple syrup you may not need to add any milk to the recipe or consider adding the oat flour to keep the dip from becoming too thin in consistency.
