Dawood basha and our contest winner

It is time to announce the name of the winner in our name the salad contest but before I get to that I need to point something out. I received a “nice” comment about a couple of spelling mistakes in my posts.

I’m sorry if you are one of the people who find such mistakes irritating. English is my second language  and though I do my best to avoid making mistakes involving spelling or grammar (I spell check and double or triple read every post )  but still somethings escape my attention and I am sorry for them.

Back to our winner, the name was selected by writing the names of the participants and then selecting one at random and the lucky person is..drumroll please….

Dawood Basha is one of my daughter’s favorite recipes. She calls it the meat ball meal. It is a Lebanese recipe that is said to take its name from a famous political figure during the time of the Ottoman Empire. The story goes that Dawood basha loved this dish so much that he ate it on a daily basis and so it was named after him. The stories also say that it was the custom to hide a silver ring in one of the meatballs as a good luck charm for the person who finds it. There are no silver rings hidden here today but it is really a wonderful meal worth trying.

This aromatic tasty recipe  is basically meatballs cooked in a tomato sauce along with green pepper, onions and potatoes (comfort food in short ). What makes this dish really special is the spices used in , in particular the hint of curry. I personally don’t usually like curry but I love it in this dish. I tried to make it without it but it is much better with it.

Ingredients

For the meatballs

500 grams ground beef

2 onions

1 clove garlic

Small bunch of parsley or coriander

Salt

All spice

Cinnamon

Curry powder

To make  the sauce

1 medium onion chopped into strips

1 clove of garlic minced

Potatoes, peeled, cut into cubes and fried

2 tomatoes cut into cubes

1 green pepper cut into strips

Salt

Curry powder

Enough water to submerge the meat balls with 2 tablespoons of tomato paste (you can use tomato juice instead)

Instructions

Prepare the meat balls by grinding beef, onion, garlic, parsley, salt and spices in a food processor then form the meat into small balls.

In a nonstick pan heat a little olive oil and then add the meat balls and brown them on all sides.

Remove the  meatballs from the pan and add the onions, cook for a couple of minutes then add the garlic. Cook for a couple of minutes more.

Add the chopped tomatoes and pepper. Stir for 5 minutes.

Add the meat balls back and then add the water and the tomato paste.

Season with salt and curry. Cover and cook for 20 minutes or so.

Serve with rice and enjoy
